This book is a prose reimagining of Patañjali’s Yoga Sūtras, a foundational text of yoga that guides the practitioner toward contemplative unity and the cessation of mental fluctuations. This reimagining departs from literal translations and traditional commentaries, often steeped in the dualism of Sāṃkhya, to offer a monistic vision where the realization of the Unity of All transcends all distinctions.
The Yoga Sūtra, the basis of this rewriting, is a new translation into French—and into American English—from the original Sanskrit texts by your servant. This translation is based on Sanskrit lexicology, often outside of context: the meaning of the words is strictly Sanskrit without interpretation, thus avoiding the biases of translators typically influenced by dualist commentators, such as Vyasa, for example, who was not a disciple of Patanjali. Who said Patanjali was a dualist?
By transforming the sūtras into poetic and accessible prose, this work seeks to capture the spiritual essence of original yoga, as it might have been conceived before the dogmatic frameworks of structured Hinduism.
This approach is based on a personal experience of more than fifty years, initiated in 1975 in an Indian ashram of the Sant Mat lineage, where the author was trained in meditative techniques attributed to Patañjali by a spiritual master. He went all the way to the end of samyama, with seedless samadhi. These seedless samadhis gave him a deep understanding, a discriminating knowledge, a discernment that guided him through this work of translating the original Yoga Sutra from Sanskrit to French and rewriting it that you are reading.
These practices, centered on inner contemplation, were deepened by a daily sādhana—consisting of meditation, satsang, and selfless service or seva—and a constant discipline of the mind, favoring reason over passion, and detachment—since returning to France in 1978. This asceticism forged an understanding of the Yoga Sutras in resonance with the Upanishads and the Vedas, where true knowledge (veda) emerges from an authentic practice, as opposed to the illusory knowledge (jñāna) of mental concepts.
The title Yogabhāvārtha embodies this vision. The Sanskrit term bhāvārtha, meaning “spiritual essence” or “profound meaning,” refers to the deep intent of a teaching, beyond words and concepts. In this reimagining, bhāvārtha reflects a quest for The Whole, where contemplative prose unveils the timeless truth of yoga.
Far from dualistic interpretations, this approach highlights authentic knowledge (veda), born from inner practice, transcending the mind’s illusions (jñāna). Yogabhāvārtha is thus an invitation to grasp the soul of yoga in a poetic, universal language.
Far from academic circles or institutionalized yoga schools, this reimagining is the work of a retiree dedicated to the selfless transmission of their experience.
Each sūtra has been rethought to reflect a non-dualistic perspective, sometimes tinged with subtle irony, as in the critique of illusory supports (I.38). The aim is to make the Yoga Sūtras accessible to modern practitioners, whether yogis or spiritual seekers, inviting them to discover a yoga freed from dualities, oriented toward realizing the Unity of All in nirbīja samādhi.
This Yoga Sūtra Libre is not a literal translation but a reinterpretation that honors the spirit of the text while reimagining it in fluid prose. Read it without preconceptions, as an invitation to explore the timeless essence of yoga, where inner discipline leads to true knowledge and absolute unity.
