Here is Patanjali's Yoga-Sutra and Its History, finally completed. This book brings together three complementary approaches. The first is a translation made directly from Sanskrit: each sutra is presented in Devanagari and transliteration, then analyzed word by word. The second is a commentary that reads the sutras for what they are, in light of the surrounding ones, rather than through the doctrine that tradition later attached to them.

Here is Patanjali's Yoga-Sutra and its history, finally completed after years of study and work, in a version that I hope is definitive.

This book brings together three complementary approaches. The first is a translation made directly from Sanskrit: each sutra is presented in Devanagari and transliteration, then analyzed word by word (root, form, case, compound, position in the sentence).

The second is a commentary that reads the sutras for what they are, in light of the surrounding ones, rather than through the doctrine that tradition later attached to them.

The third is a history of the text, included as an appendix: where it comes from, who Patanjali was, what is known about his manuscripts and commentators, and how it was read, translated, and transformed into the yoga of today.

These three approaches can be read separately; together, they lead to a reading that departs from traditional interpretation. The Yoga-Sutra does not appear here as a dualistic treatise, as Vyasa read it through an already revised Samkhya, but as the heir to mystics older than the Upanishads. In this way, one can encounter the text as close as possible to what it actually says, rather than as it has often been presented.
