For some time now, this blog has followed, chapter by chapter, the journey back up a river: the one that leads from religions and their doctrines toward the experience that precedes them all. This journey upstream reaches its end today. The book is complete, and it is with it, in its entirety, that I invite you to take this last step.

The Fundamental Experience

The book, titled "Aux sources de la spiritualité" during its writing, has taken as its definitive title "The Fundamental Experience." It comprises an introduction, 37 chapters, and an afterword — 103 pages in all.

This book was born of an astonishment. Not at the diversity of spiritualities, well known and commented upon for centuries, but at the reverse astonishment: what, within them, resembles one another. Not the dogmas, not the rites, not the gods. Something prior, belonging to inner experience long before it was ever written down.

This is the question I set out to trace back in The Fundamental Experience, an essay on the forgotten origins of spirituality, which I am today making freely available for download.

What this book is about

Before religions, before philosophies, before doctrines, there was already a human being who looked at the sky, who contemplated fire, who accompanied the dead, who experienced silence and wonder. The hypothesis of this book is simple: spirituality was not born of religion. It was born of a human experience that every tradition later interpreted through its own language, culture, and history.

This is neither a religious treatise, nor a personal-development book, nor a history of religions. It is an inquiry, carried out with the conviction that one truly understands a river only by tracing it back to its source. The reader is never invited to believe, only to look.

The image that carries the book from the first chapter to the last is this: religions are rivers, doctrines are their banks, practices are their paths. But all of them rise from a single source, and this source has never ceased to flow, even today, in anyone who takes a moment to stop covering it over.

Who this book is for

This book is for anyone curious about the inner life, whether they identify with a tradition or with none. It requires no prior knowledge and reads more like a walk than a course.

From the river to its source

The first twenty-seven chapters trace their way back, tradition after tradition, to what precedes them all. The final part of the book then changes in nature: it presents directly the spiritual Path of Yoga-Originel, which the rest of the book has only ever announced in outline, as one of the rivers spoken of from beginning to end.
